Time to step up: Paving the way to Net Zero
The industry has already made considerable adjustments to meet the target of a 31% reduction in carbon emissions produced by new build homes, as set out in the recent amendments to Part L of the Building Regulations.
However, with the Future Homes Standard expected to set a 75-80% carbon reduction target in 2025, and Net Zero by 2050 on the horizon, the pressure is on to step up decarbonisation efforts.
The retrofit issue
And it’s not just new build homes that need to be addressed, the UK has amongst the oldest housing stock in Europe, with 78% of homes having been built before 1980 and these homes need to be futureproofed too.
We need to ensure that heating and plumbing professionals are competent in meeting the complex requirements of our varied housing stock. At the same time, consumers require support and unbiased resources to help them to make informed decisions.
The CIPHE’s actions
The CIPHE is an educational charity. Our purpose is to protect the health and safety of the public through a strong qualified membership that is reinforced by their competency and technical expertise.
Knowledge sharing
Through training and education, the CIPHE aims to equip plumbing and heating installers with clear information to advise consumers, make them aware of available grants and avoid risks associated with misinformation.
The CIPHE will educate professionals via its Low Temperature Design qualification, while developing unbiased resources for consumers such as The Future of Home Heating – A Consumer Guide to empower them when making a decision for their home.
Advising the government
The CIPHE will continue to provide advice to government on the need for additional funding in the social housing sector to tackle decarbonisation, improve living standards, and alleviate the housing crisis.
We will also support the government in the creation of a consumer engagement programme to grow consumer confidence in net zero, especially when it comes to the necessary RMI work.
