Professional Standards Inspectors

The Chartered Institute of Plumbing and Heating Engineering introduced Professional Standards Inspectors (PSIs) in 1994 to enhance the Institute's role as an educational charity. PSIs have continued to play an integral role in the Institute, providing expertise on membership and professional standards.

As the title infers, PSIs have a hands-on role, which usually involves assessing the workmanship and professional abilities of others.

The role of Professional Standard Inspector is voluntary, with members give their time freely to help support the work and professional aims of the CIPHE.

The role of Professional Standards Inspectors

  • Provide a route to membership for unqualified experienced workers
  • Assist the Professional Standards Committee in assessing complaints.

PSIs and membership applications

The main route into CIPHE membership follows a structure of qualifications and industry experience e.g. the level of qualification + industry experience = membership level. However, sticking rigidly to this criteria denies membership to those with great experience and skill, but no formal qualifications or documentary evidence of practical competence.

The CIPHE recognises that years of hands-on knowledge and extensive experience in a trade is invaluable, and that not everyone has entered the industry via a traditional apprenticeship. Those operating under 'grandfather rights' have much to offer the sector and should not be discriminated against. However, a lack of formal qualifications means it is not possible to progress potential members under the traditional membership route. Therefore, an assessment via a Professional Standards Inspector offers a pathway into membership for those individuals.

PSI inspections are impartial and intended to assess the individual's skills, knowledge and experience, in relation to the CIPHE's membership criteria. The PSI's report ensures that decisions made by the CIPHE's membership team are not based solely on an application form, but also an assessment of competence and first-hand experience from one of the CIPHE's professional standards team.

PSI assessments will incur a non-refundable fee to help cover administrative and assessment costs - please view our subscriptions and fees for more information.
