Master Plumber Certificate (Hong Kong)

The Master, Journeyman and Apprentice Plumber Certificates are open to members of the Chartered Institute of Plumbing and Heating Engineering Hong Kong Branch (CIPHE-HKB).

Apprentice Certificate

The first of the awards is the Apprentice Certificate. This is an award for people who qualify by study, training, assessment or examination at NVQ Level 2, or equivalent, and thereby also obtain necessary work experience. Successful applicants commit themselves to proceed to NVQ Level 3 as required by the "charge", or undertaking, that they accept on award of the Apprentice Certificate.

Following submission of all relevant documents, including independent references, successful applicants will receive an Apprentice Plumber Certificate carrying the signatures of the President of CIPHE, Master of The Worshipful Company of Plumbers, Chairman of the City & Guilds of London Institute and the World Plumbing Council.

Any CIPHE-HKB Affiliate or Associate Member (ACIPHE) who meets the criteria, and intends to pursue career development to the Journeyman Plumber Certificate, and in due course, the Master Plumber Certificate, can apply.

Journeyman Certificate

The next step is to reach the Journeyman point on the career pathway. At this position the skill traveller has achieved success at NVQ Level 3, or equivalent, and will be setting out to accumulate further experience. This will include supplementary qualifications and demonstrating an active interest in upholding professional standards. Therefore, the Journeyman's charge incorporates a pledge to continue with career development towards mastery of the art, craft, science and practice of plumbing, until ready to apply for the Master Plumber Certificate.

Following submission of all relevant documents, including independent references, successful applicants will receive a Journeyman Plumber Certificate carrying the signatures of the President of CIPHE, Master of The Worshipful Company of Plumbers, Chairman of the City & Guilds of London Institute and the World Plumbing Council.

Any CIPHE-HKB Associate (ACIPHE) or Member (MCIPHE) who meets the criteria and intends to pursue career development with the objective of achieving Master Plumber Certificate status can apply for the Journeyman Certificate.

The Master Plumber Certificate

The Master Plumber Certificate is a prestigious award, only attained by the highest skilled members of the plumbing and heating industry. The certificate marks the expertise of members, who have attained a level of excellence in their chosen profession that may rightly be described as mastery of the art, craft, science and practice of plumbing.

One essential requirement is that those who successfully apply for the Master Plumber Certificate shall be enrolled on the Register of Plumbers, inaugurated by the Worshipful Company of Plumbers in July 1886, and maintained by the CIPHE since January 1970. An alternative for applicants living in Hong Kong is that they must be a ‘Licensed Plumber’ through the Hong Kong Water Supplies Department.

In addition, the applicant must provide evidence of achieving a satisfactory level of technical knowledge and hold a recognised practical qualification in practical plumbing through the Construction Industry Council or equivalent. A further requirement is that the applicant must be registered with the Engineering Council (EC) at either EngTech, IEng or CEng level. A panel formed from representatives of the CIPHE and the Worshipful Company of Plumbers in the UK will assess all applications.

Following submission of all relevant documents, including independent references, successful applicants will receive a Master Plumber Certificate carrying the signatures of the President of CIPHE, Master of The Worshipful Company of Plumbers, Chairman of the City & Guilds of London Institute and the World Plumbing Council.

Any Member (MCIPHE) or Fellow (FCIPHE) of the CIPHE-HKB can apply for the Master Plumber Certificate, provided the criteria has been attained and clearly demonstrated. Adequate experience in plumbing is an essential part of the award. In addition, successful candidates must submit evidence of CPD when providing their Curriculum Vitae.
